Short answer: Near Vernon, you can keep a boat on Okanagan Lake by owning or renting a slip in a condo marina, joining a yacht club, or trailering your boat and launching at a public ramp like Paddlewheel Park. Condo slips are the most convenient but limited: at The Strand Lakeside, slip rights generally sell for about $55,000 to $75,000 or more.
Option 1: A condo marina slip
Some waterfront complexes, including The Strand in Okanagan Landing, have private marinas for owners. You can:
- Buy a condo that includes slip rights
- Buy slip rights from another owner, where the bylaws allow it
- Rent a slip from an owner for the season
At The Strand, slips can only be sold or leased to other registered owners, which keeps the marina private. See how the Strand marina works.
Option 2: A yacht club
The Vernon Yacht Club is in Okanagan Landing. Clubs offer moorage to members, plus a social community.
Option 3: Trailer and launch
Many boaters store their boat at home or in storage and launch as needed. Paddlewheel Park has a public launch with daily and seasonal passes from the City of Vernon.
What to check before buying a slip
- Slip size, maximum beam and whether it has a lift
- The marina bylaws and insurance requirements (The Strand requires $2 million in liability coverage)
- Whether slip rights transfer with the condo or separately
- The season: many marinas ask owners to remove boats in the fall
Is a slip worth it?
For regular boaters, a slip steps from your door is hard to beat, and slips at popular complexes tend to hold their value. If you boat only occasionally, renting or launching may make more sense.
